CAREDN Supernode Deployed

Good morning hand happy Sunday to all.

As of this morning, CAREDN is now on the new AREDN paradigm whereby there is a single network connection to the ‘outside world’, via KV3T-CHI-SUPERNODE. That means that when you go to the mesh screen of your CAREDN connected node, you will now see only nodes in our local network on your mesh screen. However, you will also a new option at the top of the screen called “cloud mesh”. When you click on this button, you will see all of the nodes from all over the world, just like before. Those nodes and services all over the world are still available and should work just like they did before, however now in a much more efficient way. This supernode paradigm allows the supernode to act as a single gateway to the outside world, that way all of the OSLR traffic within our Chicago network can be very concise and efficient, and only when you need to reach beyond our local network, does the larger network come into play. In an analogy with a home internet network, it is kind of like our Chicago network is all one big LAN, and my supernode is the gateway to the internet. Local LAN traffic will traverse the local Chicago network quickly and efficiently without accidentally routing across the world before going back to the node a few miles away (which was something that I observed happen previously). Now my supernode is keeping track of the rest of the world, and therefore the rest of the nodes on the network need not do so.

In order to keep this system working as intended, I would ask that other users NOT setup their own supernode. I know it is tempting because it says ‘super’ in the name, but having dual supernodes in a single ‘mesh island’ is not how the system is intended to work, and will cause issues with routing.

You can see the current supernodes deployed world wide (including ours) at the public mesh map at the following URL: https://arednmap.xojs.org/

If you are on the CAREDN mesh, you can see the local nodes at our local meshmap instance at the following domain: http://kv3t-meshmap.local.mesh/meshmap/webpage/

If you would like to learn more about supernodes, here are a few additional good reads about the concept behind supernodes, how they work, what problem them solve, and how they do so:

Daniel Halter, KD9MSN, joined the mesh via a tunnel connection. Welcome to the CAREDN mesh network Daniel.

Daniel is a near neighbor to Casey, KV3T, but just a bit outside of RF range. Casey and Daniel are hoping they can somehow, some day, get an RF connection up between their two QTHs.

CAREDN at NS9RC Field Day

To all who are interested in learning more about AREDN, please join us at the NS9RC field day event, the afternoon of June 25th at Clarkson Park in Northfield.

I will have two larger relay nodes on site and spread out, with IP Phones, cameras, and one of which is entirely battery powered. Additionally, I will have several other nodes around for demonstrations and testing. If you have any AREDN hardware about, please bring it as well and get it connected into our network. If you have a new device, I’ll be happy to help you flash the AREDN firmware to it on site. It is a good opportunity to explore AREDN a bit, do some testing, and if you have any questions I’ll be happy to talk you though it.

Hardware will include:

  • NS9RC Relay Station
    • Mikrotik LHGXL “NS9RC-5G-LHGXL”
      • IP Camera
      • IP Phone
    • Ubiquiti Rocket M2 / Ubiquiti 120° Sector Antenna “KV3T-2G-RELAY”
  • KV3T Service Station
    • Ubiquiti Rocket M2 / Cisco high gain patch antenna “NS9RC-2G-M2”
      • PTZ IP Camera
      • IP Phone
  • KV3T Service Node
    • GL.iNet GL-AR300M “KV3T-2G-AR300M”
  • KV3T Service Node
    • GL.iNet GL-AR150 “KV3T-2G-AR150”
  • NS9RC Service Node
    • GL.iNet GL-AR150 “KV3T-2G-AR150”
  • KV3T Cell Phone Service Node (Can connect your cell phone directly to the mesh)
    • GL.iNet GL-USB150 “KV3T-2G-USB150”
    • Can demo using a cellphone directly on the mesh to call the other IP phones
  • Additionally, we will be be connected to CAREDN, so you will be able to see all other devices on CAREDN, and see all other services hosted there.

I cannot wait to show off and play with these nodes. I’ll see you all there.

All the best, Casey KV3T

On big screens, paragraphs and headings should not take up the full container width, but we want tables, code blocks and similar to take the full width.

Code snippets like var foo = "bar"; can be shown inline.

Also, this should vertically align with this and this.

Code can also be shown in a block element.

foo := "bar";
bar := "foo";

Code can also use syntax highlighting.

func main() {
  input := `var foo = "bar";`

  lexer := lexers.Get("javascript")
  iterator, _ := lexer.Tokenise(nil, input)
  style := styles.Get("github")
  formatter := html.New(html.WithLineNumbers())

  var buff bytes.Buffer
  formatter.Format(&buff, style, iterator)

  fmt.Println(buff.String())
}
Long, single-line code blocks should not wrap. They should horizontally scroll if they are too long. This line should be long enough to demonstrate this.

Inline code inside table cells should still be distinguishable.

Language Code
Javascript var foo = "bar";
Ruby foo = "bar"{

Small images should be shown at their actual size.

Large images should always scale down and fit in the content container.
